Is It Safe To Live In America?

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

In these tough economic times, people become desparate to make ends meet.  This generally means an increase in crime, and one of the best ways to get money is to rob a house.

Your first line of defense is your door lock.  Is it a deadbolt?  do you lock your doors, even when you are home?

The second line of defense is your landscaping.  Is your house easy to see from the street and neighbors, or hidden by shrubs, tres and bushes?  Make sure there is no easy way to hide while breaking into a window or lower level door.

The third line of defense is your neighborhood watch program.  Do you have a watch program in place, and use it?

burglars to go places where it is easy to rip you off.  If your neighborhood has signage about your Neighborhood Watch program, they may go somewhere else.  If you have an alarm sign in your front yard, they will go somewhere else.

So, the goal here it to make your house the last choise for arobber looking for loot.

If you are like many other families in the United States and around the globe, then you have had occasion to think about putting a home safety security system into your house to protect your family and property. Increasingly, the trend is toward video surveillance systems which are now more affordable than ever. But, when it comes down to the decision point, some people get stopped in their tracks by the multitude of choices available.

Not long ago, most homeowners never even thought about including video surveillance into their overall home security plans. But today things are different. The good news is the cost of all security equipment has dropped significantly in recent years. As it has become more available, it has become more popular and vital for security functions.

And, that means that in today’s hi-tech world, even an average, ordinary family is able to install a good home safety security system without breaking their budget. It hasn’t been much more than about a dozen years ago that the only place you would see this kind of sophistication in remote video surveillance cameras was in big business establishments or government facilities.

One of the most popular features of a home security system that integrates video surveillance is the option to have the video feeds sent to the internet. This means that busy parents who are concerned about how things are going back at home can log into a password protected website and view the live feeds from the various cameras in their network.

Not only is this helpful for moms and dads who put in long hours at the office, but this IP video surveillance arrangement is also perfect for the person who travels a great deal and is concerned about their home security while away. Some of the home security systems also monitor things like temperature and moisture levels. For homeowners who have leaky basements or tropical aquariums that must maintain certain temperatures, this can provide a tremendous amount of peace of mind when they are away.

Many home security systems provide monitoring as well that keeps tabs on all the various indicators of home safety. This includes alarms that go off and notify the monitoring center in case of intrusion, fire, a “panic button” being pressed, temperature drops and changes in moisture levels. The monitoring center can then dispatch the appropriate help for the situation.

However, it should be noted that the monitoring centers do not have access to the video surveillance part of the home security system. This is only available to the homeowner and is accessible only through a secure network. A security company doesn’t eavesdrop on home activities.

Taking care of home safety security concerns is rising in importance to families. In too many ways, the world is becoming more dangerous, even though it is becoming “smaller” thanks to rapid communication and travel. Installing a good home surveillance system can provide a wonderful level of peace of mind to busy parents and families.

Home Security Ramblings

Security Light

So many wonderful things are coming into our lives these days as technology quickly brings us new conveniences and advancements. With so much positive happening around us it is too bad that there is also more need than ever to make home security a priority in our lives. However, it is encouraging to know that there are many simple tips and tricks that you can implement around your home that are actually very effective tools in improving security and deterring crime. There are really two primary categories that encompass these security tips for your home and these are low cost techniques and no cost techniques that are effective for times when you are at home, while away at the office, or away on vacation. Both approaches are important and relevant in protecting personal property and preventing theft. Even when at home in your comfortable surroundings, you can still be at risk of an aggressive intruder set on the theft of your property. Reports indicate that even while violent crimes are in decline, home burglaries are on the increase in most areas, and it happens fairly frequently that the owner is at home when these break-ins occur. One simple home security technique is to make sure all the windows are secured against unwanted entry. Windows are generally an easy point of entry, and barring windows is an easy and effective way to turn away burglars. Another easy, and cheap, way to make windows much more challenging to open is by using a piece of sturdy wood cut to just the right length and placed in the track of the window. One of the easiest entry points for the burglar is, surprisingly enough, the doors of the home. At the same time, this vulnerable entry is also one of the easiest to defend and protect. Quality locks are always a basic measure to secure your home. If your home is fairly new, it probably already has locks that are in good shape in place. However, it never hurts to carefully review their condition and have an expert look at them if you are in doubt about how well-made they are. Obviously, a dead-bolt lock, properly installed is the next layer of security. A seated door stop is another cheap and easy addition makes it harder to force a door open. Keep in mind that all exterior doors should open inward to optimize security. Every burglar has two primary enemies: light and sound. Strategic placement of outdoor lighting, especially near entrances, can be a very effective deterrent. Interior lights are also helpful. There is no need for bright lighting in every room, but even a little light will make a burglar think twice before trying to enter your home. Burglars are often clever and persistent, but they also prefer easy targets. Home security can start with making sure that a burglar does not have a good place to lurk but trimming trees and shrubs that might create hiding places, having some simple outdoor lighting, and making sure your locks are in good working order.

Basic Home Security Information

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Shiny and colored objects usually attract Infa...
The excitement of having a baby can make things seem more overwhelming than they have to be, but you can always feed your brain with home security information that will make your new addition feel safer in his or her home. There seems to be a lot to remember between doctor’s appointments, cribs, blankets, pacifiers, strollers, and your expanding stomach, but taking the nine months to also prepare your home so that it is safer for your child is something that should not be forgotten. There are two different schools of thought when it comes to baby proofing a home, and they could not be more different.

Some people think that home security information in regards to childproofing a home is meaningless, and it will teach your child to be more careless than if they just learned the concept of no. Many people understand that you cannot childproof every environment that your child is in, and you cannot ask everyone you know to childproof their own homes because of your kid. Other people feel like their youngsters should feel comfortable enough in their own homes to be able to explore it freely. They think that if their baby were at another person’s home, they would be more likely to keep a closer eye over them. However, there is a compromise between childproofing as an obsession, and leaving your children to fend for themselves. Home security information is a responsibility when you’re a parent.

Getting a Home Security System in Place

Childproofing your home can be simple, if you keep it simple. There are a lot of options on the market, so make sure that you know about home security information before you go into the store. A good product to buy is the electrical outlet cover. Be conscious of home safety and electronics by making sure that cords and equipment are kept out of reach from children. They are inexpensive and come in packs that have up to 100 in them. Electrical outlets are one of the more common childproofing must haves because children are attracted to them for some reason or another. If you have stairs or other places in the home where toddlers should not go, you should probably look into getting a security gate to block off areas and give yourself some peace of mind. Also, the next time that your phone book is delivered, you should check and see if there is a magnet included with important phone numbers like the fire and police departments. Finally, one of the most important things to do is to not get ahead of yourself when buying your child toys. There are so many wonderful toys on the market, but many times the toys come with multiple pieces and parts, so make sure to buy your baby age appropriate toys to prevent possible choking.

A Secure Home Which Includes Pets

Another thing that concerns your child, your home, and the safety of everyone in your home is to childproof your pets the best that you can for security purposes. Learn about home security information for pets. Before you bring your infant home, you should play with your dog’s ears, tail, and body while they eat. Many dogs can get protective over their food, and they have to learn to get used to hands in and around their food. Make sure that you buy your dog or cat a bed and give it a designated spot in the house. When your child can understand, let them know that the spot is the dog’s peaceful place and they should not be bothered when they are in their place. Eventually, your pet will seek refuge in their personal place when they are tired, annoyed, or want to be left alone. Lastly, you should bring your baby’s blanket home and give it to your dog after the first day in the hospital. Your dog will have a chance to get used to your baby’s smell, and he or she will not feel like an intruder has entered your home once you bring the new addition home from the hospital. Prepare your pet, so that you can make your home safe for you child initially, and you can relax later.

No one has all of the answers, nor can anyone gather and absorb all of the home security information that is available. The reason that no one knows everything is because all children are different, and their curiosities are not predictable. Some children are going to be completely obsessed with a socket, while others will care less. Some children will find the dirtiest corner of your home and lick off the floor, while other children will want to wash their hands constantly. The easiest thing to do is to examine your child as an individual, and then determine which areas of your home need to be concentrated in home safety and security.

Home Security System Comparisons - What To Consider

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

There is more to comparing Home Security Alarm Systems then meets the eye. One of the biggest costs is the monthly monitoring fee (assuming you are comparing monitored alarm solutions). Many companies offer free equipment, but charge more per month to monitor it, so your up front costs are lower but your lifetime costs can sometime be significantly higher.

The top two home security alarm monitoring companies in the US are ADT and Protect America. You can see a comparison chart of their upfront and total costs on our home alarm comparisons page.

Continuing with the monthly monitoring service fees, note that some charge more if you have more sensors.  Many will quote a base price with a single control panel ad a few sensors, but you need to count your windows and doors, cameras and motion detectors, etc. to see exactly how many sensors you will need to have monitored.  Only then can you find the true cost of your monitored alarm solution.

What You Need To Know About ADT Home Security

ADT / Tyco HeadquartersOnce upon a time, an ADT home security system was only for the rich and famous and a dog was all you needed for a good in home security system. However, with burglars becoming bolder, break-ins occurring during the day, and a blatant disregard for whether or not a home is occupied, a home security alarm system is almost becoming a necessity. However, you need to pick a system that will not only be reliable, but that will also put fear in the hearts of potential burglers with its alarm abilities. ADT home security is one of the leaders in the security alarm industry. There are advantages to picking a company that is widely known because you ensure the best protection for yourself and your family, but you need to be sure to read the fine print as well.

ADT home security is a little different from their competitors because they have specialized packages that can be customized to you and your family’s protective needs. Their process starts by allowing the customer to speak to a representative who can help decide which in home security system is the best. There are different additions that can be added to these systems, such as fire, carbon monoxide, and medical alert monitoring. However, these additions are an additional charge, and they can only be purchased in conjunction with an alarm system. Therefore, do not skip the step of talking to a representative in order to decide what elements are necessary to keeping a secure home environment.

Some people feel like a security system is pointless, but in a survey conducted by the National Burglar and Fire Protection Agency in 2000, nine out of ten burglars said that they would have been less likely to break into a home if they knew it had a security system. With that being said, ADT security provides a convenient, wireless system that can be installed with minimum inconvenience, or damage to your home. Therefore, if you are a renter and you want to install a system, you can disconnect it and take it with you to your next residence for little to no cost. The systems are also affordable, costing $32.99 per month, and there is no charge for relocation after you have been a customer for two years or more.

As a paying customer, you want to know that a product is going to work. You want to have a reason to differentiate one company from the next. ADT home security gives their customers an extra assurance that is not widely offered elsewhere. There is a theft protection guarantee that promises to pay up to $500 on a home’s insurance deductible if there is ever a burglary. There is also a 20% discount on your home owner’s insurance when you sign up with ADT home security along with a money back guarantee within 6 months if you are not satisfied or you feel like you have changed your mind. Also, if you decide that you would like to move, you don’t have to leave your system and start again. You may take your security system to your next residence, and if you have been with ADT for two or more years, you will have a $100 discount on your installation. However, if you decide to move before two years, it will cost you the installation fee and possibly a new contract. Make sure to check and negotiate for all the best deals before you invest in your alarm system.

People are consistently complaining about not being able to talk to an actual person when they call customer service lines, or try to pay a bill. ADT’s in-home security system also offers the comfort of a live person. The specialized feature is called the 2 Way Voice, and it lets a real person respond when an alarm goes off. The 2 Way Voice feature also has a time limit, therefore, if you have this type of alarm at your place of business and you do not respond to the call in time, the police will be called unnecessarily. The catch to this feature is that it requires a landline, and with many people using their cell phones now for a primary source of communication, this could present a problem. If you don’t have a landline, you may want to do some further research and investigation into ADT home security in order to make sure their other features are worth your while. Choose home security services that are tailored to your needs by assessing what your needs are ahead of time.
